Amazon Project GOAT

Deep Soil Mixing (DSM) & Displacement Grouted Columns (DGC)

Salinas, CA

Project Description

AGI designed and constructed a ground improvement
system consisting of Deep Soil Mixing (DSM) and
Displacement Grouted Columns (DGC) to improve
bearing capacity and mitigate excessive static and
seismic settlements caused by the high foundation
loads and geotechnical conditions present at the Amazon Project GOAT site. A 3-foot-thick cement-
treated Load Transfer Platform (LTP) was constructed between the slab and top of the DGCs to uniformly
transfer the load into the ground improvement
elements. A total of 1,927 DSM elements (~90,921
cubic yards) and 4,746 DGC elements (~23,330 cubic
yards) were installed. Originally expected to take six months, AGI was tasked with accelerating the schedule to just three months. To achieve this, AGI’s deployed seven (7) drill rigs, operating on two 12-hour shifts, 24 hours a day, Monday through Saturday. In order to achieve the necessary production, both stationary and mobile batch plants were established onsite to supply grout and sanded slurry cement mix.

Application

  • Limit Static and Seismic Settlement
    • Total Static Settlement: 1.75 inches
    • Total Seismic Settlement: 3 inches
    • Differential Static Settlement: 1⁄2 inch
      between adjacent columns
  • Support Building Footings and Load Transfer Platform (LTP) in the slab areas

Geotechnical Conditions

  • Soft Compressible Clays
  • Interbedded Dense Clay, Silty & Sandy Soils
  • Liquefiable Soils
