AGI designed and constructed the ground improvement system for the new Glendale Water and Power Plant in Glendale, CA. DSM columns were installed at various depths ranging from 33 to 46 ft across the site to assist on transferring building and foundation loads to a desired bearing capacity and to mitigate the excessive seismically induced liquefaction and lateral spreading. A total of (1351) 6’ DSM were installed either in an overlapping cellular grid pattern, buttress pattern, or as discrete columns. PQ coring was the chosen method to verify the continuity of the DSM columns as well as verifying the intended design strength through the Unconfined Compression Strength testing. The DSM installation and testing all satisfactorily met or exceeded project specifications.
