College of Marin LRC

Deep Soil Mixing (DSM)

Kentfield, CA

Project Description

AGI designed and constructed ground improvement work for the construction of the College of Marin’s new multipurpose Learning Resource Center located in Kentfield, CA. DSM columns were installed to assist in transferring building loads below the surface soils that were not able to meet the desired bearing capacity for the proposed building foundations and to mitigate excessive seismically induced liquefaction and lateral spreading. A total of (328) 6’ diameter DSM columns were installed in an overlapping cellular pattern. PQ coring was utilized to verify continuity and design strength. DSM work met project specifications and the work was completed on schedule and with zero safety incidents.

Application

  • Limit total static and dynamic settlement
  • Reduce lateral spread movement
  • Improve bearing capacity

Geotechnical Conditions

  • Non-Engineered Fill
  • Holocene and Pleistocene age alluvial deposits
